Tips on Securing Your Home

Make communication your family's highest priority. Knowing what is important to each of you, what schedules are in place, and who is responsible for what, will help you build the wall of knowledge which is the ultimate protection for any family.

Acknowledge any of the fears your children may have. It is soothing to them to know that you realize there are things in this world of which they are afraid. You can remind them that it's a parent's job to keep them safe and that you'll protect them.

Regularly review your home’s security status with your children: what doors and windows should always be locked; how to answer the telephone; when to answer the front door and when not; what emergency phone numbers are important and how to give the address properly if there is an emergency.

Walk your neighborhood with your family to help your children be aware of their surroundings and their neighbors. Make them aware of the people to whom they can turn for help if you’re not there. Teach them when to avoid strangers and where to find a safe place in an emergency.

Get to know your neighbors. Don't let fences wall you off from relationships with the neighbors around you. Share your security concerns with your neighbors. One of the strongest deterrents to neighborhood crime is the constant exchange of information between families in the area.

When you travel and are away from your home for any period more than two days: stop all deliveries; notify your neighbors how long you will be gone and when you will be returning; set light timers in various locations throughout your home; have the lawn mowed or sidewalks shoveled; and arrange for hand bills to be picked up.

Teach your children respect for themselves and for others and build their self-esteem. At all ages, children react better to approval and affection. Know the names of the neighborhood children.

Teach your children to maintain a level of privacy, especially on the internet. Instruct them to avoid posting your address, phone numbers, or other personal information on any of the popular websites. Once posted, that information is available to untold millions of people.

If you own firearms, protect your family and your community by locking them away in a secure area. Gain maximum security by storing your ammunition in a safe location away from firearms. Be certain your young children cannot gain access to weapons of any kind.
