Tips on Securing Your Business
Learn the schedules and routes of your local police coverage for the neighborhood. If possible, visit the precinct or substation in which your facility is located; introduce yourself and your business. Ask to be included on any distribution list of alerts of criminal activity in the area.
Install high level lights at all your exterior doorways and passages to them. Your local power company may well be able to assist you in providing such outdoor lighting. Consider installing motion detectors to activate the lighting over those which are not normally used. Consider making the commitment of funds, if you have not yet done so, for the installation of light intensifying cameras to capture any movement in these areas.
Maintain detailed records on the release of any method of access to your business, whether that be keys, swipe cards, fobs, combinations or any other method of locking and unlocking the premises. Alarm codes, call lists and passwords should be part of those records to be reviewed on a regular schedule and confirmation that all names on the list should still have access to the premises. Be certain that all your employees are aware of this process of review.
Examine on a regular schedule your emergency plans for evacuation of the premises in case of fire or other emergency. Be certain those plans are conspicuously posted and distributed to all your employees. Solicit their suggestions; you may find that their involvement can be beneficial.
Run frequent testing on all aspects of your security systems, from the fire and sprinkler to access and all forms of burglar alarms. Use your monitoring provider to set the testing schedule and involve as many of your key employees as possible in each phase of the testing.
Each and every business has its own distinct and important aspects of dealing with security issues. Meet with your security company’s representative to review the experiences and concerns he has dealt with in other businesses. You may find a wealth of information has been accumulated into which you can tap.
If your business is a storefront, be certain your lighting scheme provides illumination for law enforcement cruisers to see into the depth of the store. Secured and lighted premises are far less likely to be the target for break-ins. During operating hours, that same visibility can be a deterrent to the would-be robber.
Tour your own facility with a critical eye. Look for the areas of vulnerability: break-in, accident hazard, fire, leakage, pilfering, any other concerns you may have. No one knows your business as well as you do, and that knowledge can allow your Security Consultant from Johns Brothers to assist you in planning and installing the systems which can reduce your vulnerability.
