The question is all too often posed: “What happens if an intruder cuts the phone line?”. Simply put, the siren or horn will go off as per normal, but the alarm panel cannot contact the Central Monitoring Station to report the break in.

At this point, the owner is depending solely upon the horn or siren and the strobe if so equipped to scare the intruder away. In many cases it will; however, the premises remain wide open to others until secured properly.

Most residential burglaries are crimes of convenience or opportunity. Intruders don't plan to enter a specific home; they seize upon an immediate opportunity to do so.

The presence of good physical security and an alarm system is usually enough to send them to a neighbor's home, where they know that they can find the same things as in yours, but with little risk or difficulty in entering.

However, the opposite is true with commercial burglaries or robberies where thieves are often more knowledgeable in such matters. The professional thief knows the value of security systems but attacks the premises anyway.
