UL Approval

Johns Brothers Security meets the requirements to maintain UL-Approval of its Central Monitoring Station at significant cost in order to provide state-of-the-art service to its commercial and home security system customers.

Why is UL Approval Important?

Johns Brothers spends a considerable amount of money yearly to maintain its UL Approval.

Underwriters Laboratories is a non-profit product safety certification organization. The UL Labs have been testing products and writing safety standards for more than 100 years. UL was originally founded by a group of insurance companies to test fire-rated building materials. Today UL’s testing and certification have been expanded to immense numbers of products and services throughout the world.

To be UL-certified, the Johns Brothers Security Central Monitoring Station is annually inspected on-site by UL inspectors. UL requirements concentrate the inspection on: monitoring equipment in operation; construction of the facility (i.e. fire proof walls, secure doors; second floor location; no outside windows); power supply security and redundancy; staffing and operating procedures.

A major requirement of UL certification is that the Johns Brothers Central Monitoring station and its staff must be solely dedicated to monitoring, and monitoring only. Some non-UL companies utilize monitoring staff to run an answering service which defrays some of the expense of the station but can distract the dispatchers from the important task of monitoring and responding to alarms.

In order to write discounted home and business insurance policies, many insurance companies insist that all installed alarms be monitored, and monitored only by a Central Station which is UL-approved. Many business insurers also demand that all installed equipment be UL-approved.
